Assignment #5

This page contains assignment #5 for Performance Evaluation. This assignment is due on Monday, November 8 in class. Any solutions that you find "on the web" must be referenced as such. Please start each problem on a new sheet of paper and put your name on all sheets of paper.

  1. Solve for the mean throughput and delay for the below closed queueing network. The service rates are in customers per second and there are 10 customers in the (closed) system. Hint: The program mva.c might be useful.

  2. Come up with an expression for the ratio of mean delay for M/M/1 to M/D/1 as a function of utilization. You must show your work. Hint: Think about the P-K M/G/1 formula that we covered in class.

  3. Model the packet lengths from the trace in in problem #5 in assignment #2 with an empirical distribution. Generate 500,000 packet lengths (i.e., a synthetic trace) and compare the characteristics of your synthetic trace (of packet lengths) to the real trace. Explain any differences. Hint: The program genemp.c might be useful.

  4. Resubmit your project proposal with revisions based on the feedback you have already received.

  5. Submit an outline of your project paper. Clearly identify all the section headings and major topic coverage in each section. Identify the figures that you will include. Submit this in the IEEE paper format as described on the project page.
