The CSE Volunteers are a group of Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate and graduate students who volunteer their time and talent to the School District of Hillsborough County (SDHC) and other community interests. The volunteer students serving in SDHC schools work with the Hillsborough Country Instructional Information and Technology Division staff. Our students get hands-on experience in managing large-scale IT operations. The schools get much needed technical support to help maintain their classroom IT operations. We think that this is a great win-win proposition! This program began in fall 2004 and finished its 10th semester in spring 2009. Through the end of fall 2007 we have had over 80 student volunteers in over 25 different schools. The total volunteering time completed is about 5000 hours (this is equal to 2.5 person years). In past semesters we have had a special focus on East Tampa schools.

In spring 2009 we had three students develop community-oriented websites for the Sulphur Springs community. Links to these websites will be made available when the websites go live.

The USF press release for this is here. Significantly, CSE Volunteers was one of 20 USF programs listed in the application for this classification.

  • A research paper that appeared in the ACM SIGCSE conference in Houston, Texas in March 2006 is here (and the PowerPoint presentation is here).

  • An article that appeared in the Winter 2006 issue of the USF Engineer magazine is here.

  • A December 2004 USF press release about CSE Volunteers is here.

  • The original presentation made to Hillsborough County in July 2004 to propose this program is here.
