Useful software
- You will need an "industrial strength" C/C++ compiler to use on your home
PC. Dialing-in to use gcc on the Sun servers is really very silly. I
recommend the free command line Borland compiler available for
download... here.
To compile a multi-thread console app, use -WM as the command line
option.
- Unix command line tools are always useful. WinXs32 is a shareware package
(for $30.00) that brings most of these tools to Windows and is downloadable...
here.
- Cygwin Unix tools for windows can be found here...
cygwin. There tools are more
difficult to install and "deal with" than the WinWx32 above (IMHO).
- Perl is the best language for manipulating large text files (such as Web
access logs). ActiveState supports Perl for Windows and can be found...
here. Their product is available
for free download.
- SMPL is a set of C functions to support event-based simulation modeling.
SMPL is downloadable... here as
a ZIP file. Be sure to read the readme.txt file
Online manuals
Server sites
- A very useful site on servers is
serverwatch.
Here (on this site) is a list of links to access about 40 different Web
servers (some of them are open source).
