Departmental Degree Programs
The Department offers coursework and study in all areas fundamental to Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Information Systems. Three undergraduate degree programs are offered within the Department which lead to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, in Computer Engineering, and in Information Systems. The program flowcharts are provided as a guide for the student. Please note that the catalog remains as the definitive reference for degree program requirements.
Computer Science - The Computer Science program focuses on the design, development, and application of software systems and on the theory of computation. Additional course work in algorithms, discrete structures, object oriented design, data structures, operating systems, digital logic design, computer architecture, and a wide range of advanced electives extend and supplement the core. Program flowcharts are available for the following catalog years: 2006/2007, 2007/2008, 2008/2009 and 2009/2010
Computer Engineering - The Computer Engineering program emphasizes the application of engineering principles to the design of computer hardware and software and devotes additional time to issues of computer architecture and advanced topics in hardware design, including extensive laboratory work. Students in this program also acquire a broad background in engineering topics through related coursework in the College. Program flowcharts are available for the following catalog years: 2006/2007, 2007/2008, 2008/2009 and 2009/2010
Information Systems - The Information Systems program combines a basic coverage of software with a core of business related courses and additional course work in areas such as networks and databases. The emphasis in this program is on the application of computing. Program flowcharts are available for the following catalog years: 2006/2007, 2007/2008, 2008/2009 and 2009/2010
Five Year Program - The Department offers a five year B.S/M.S program where highly motivated students can complete both a B.S and M.S degree in five years. The five year program allows students to take graduate courses in their senior year that count towards both their B.S and M.S degrees. See Dr. Tindell for further information on the five year program.
Computer Science Minor - The Department also offers a minor in Computer Science to well prepared students from other majors. The minor comprises 18 to 21 hours of course work within the Departmental core courses and advanced electives. The minor is intended for students who are interested in learning the fundamentals of Computer Science to enhance their major. The minor will also be of interest to those students intending to pursue a graduate degree where computing is essential background knowledge. See Dr. Tindell for further information on the minor.
Departmental Electives - The program flow allows the undergraduate student to choose different courses of a hardware, software or theory perspective to meet department requirements. This flexibility offers a "customized" background for the individual student. To assist you in determining which courses will meet degree requirements, a list of typical elective courses is provided here. This list is not all-inclusive, and courses may be added or deleted, as faculty changes. A course which is required in one program may be an elective in another. Be sure to verify the course with the desired degree program. See Dr. Tindell for further information on Departmental electives.
