GRADUATE PROGRAM
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers the degrees of Master of Science in Computer Science and Master of Science in Computer Engineering (with thesis and non-thesis options in both), and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering. The major areas of research are artificial intelligence, coding theory, computer architecture, computer graphics, computer networks, computer vision, expert systems, fault-tolerant computing, human/computer interface, image processing, robotics, software engineering, and VLSI design.

The Masters degree program requires a minimum of 30 semester credit hours of work beyond the Baccalaureate. Courses in three core areas are required; other courses are chosen to serve the individual student's interest. The doctoral degree is attained by completing course work as advised by the doctoral committee and a minimum of 20 hours of dissertation beyond the Masters degree. The Doctor of Philosophy is conferred in recognition of a candidate's highest level of scholarly achievement in independently conducting and reporting significant research. Other requirements include passing a Ph.D. qualifying examination, teaching at least one undergraduate course, and presenting a dissertation defense.

Our past and current graduate students come from 40 different countries on five continents. In the past nine years, 12 of our graduate students have been awarded the USF Outstanding Thesis/Dissertation Award, and in Fall 2004, our department held the first annual CSE Outstanding Graduate Research Award competition. Twelve students participated, and two prizes were awarded in both Ph.D. and Masters categories. Our graduates are well placed in research labs, private industry, and educational institutions both in the U.S. and abroad.
